David Zorc To: 'MARCELO YUJI HIMORO' RE: Chavacano Language Corpus Project / Chavacano Reader Dear Yuji,   Thanks for your email and the opportunity to assist you with regard to Chavacano data. I am sorry for this delay, I had a series of medical appointments over the past two days.   I never got a personal copy of the Chavacano Concordance. That was held by the computer staff at the Language Research Center in Hyattsville, Maryland who generated it. However, I do have the concordance generated from it. This version is sorted alphabetically by the symbol or word in the center of the text, the text on the left and right represent the context of the central form. This document is 15,767 pages in length and purportedly contains 9,215,733 (over 9 million) raw words.   I tried sending you  {ChavConc.rtf}, but it was 78,014 KB in size and would not go out.  My Outlook program crashed.   I then tried sending you {ChavConc.txt), but it was 46,988 KB in size and also would not go out.   I will try breaking the file into much smaller pieces, until I can successfully get something to you that you can work with. For now let me send this email and follow up in a few hours with what I can get send.   The numbers at the left represent the line numbers in the original text. I’m not sure if you sorted it successfully, you might be able to reconstruct much of the original Corpus file. To be sure, save any versions you work on with different names in case of a crash or corruption.  I would be happy to supply you with whatever I can. I need to go through my Chavacano directory and see what might be valuable in your research. I’ll also let you know what I do have. Since you mentioned the Concordance the attached is the best thing I have available in the domain.   I might have some original versions of the readings in the original spelling, but I need to check that. Most of my work was on printouts rather than within files. I then rekeyed things for the final version.   The Language Research Center (LRC) of Hyattsville, Maryland and Dunwoody Press both still exist. Unfortunately, AECOM (the company that bought McNeil Technologies) found Dunwoody Press to not be profitable and sold the website domain for a pittance. This resulted in the so-called “death” of the press. They can be reached via snail mail: Language Research Center Attention: Director 6525 Belcrest Road Suite 550 Hyattsville, MD  20782 Phone: 301-864-1410   I have been very remiss in keeping in touch with Ms. Albrecht. I shall have to email her to thank her for helping you out. Before signing off, I am curious. I assume you are Japanese based on “Yuji Himoro” and working in Spain led to “Marcelo”, or are you Spanish-Japanese or Japanese-Spanish in heritage? Wishing you every success in your endeavors, David = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tuesday, May 22, 2018 8:35 AM From: MARCELO YUJI HIMORO To: dzorc1@comcast.net RE: Chavacano Language Corpus Project / Chavacano Reader Dear R. David Zorc: My name is Marcelo Yuji Himoro. I am a MA student of Linguistics at National University of Distance Education (Madrid, Spain). I am currently working on my master's thesis related to Chavacano. At the first part of my project, I am studying the spelling variations according to different variables. I have been trying to gather as many texts in Chavacano as I can (from books, newspapers and social media) to try to cover as much variation as possible. I actually started learning Chavacano many years ago using your Chavacano Reader that originated from the Chavacano Language Corpus Project. As McNeil Technologies Inc. was acquired and even Dunwoody Press closed down, I do not know anymore who should I contact to possibly have access to at least part of the corpus (excerpts of different texts or at least the texts in the reader in their original spelling would do it). I started trying to locate the people who worked in the project. The only one who has replied me as of now was Ms. Christine Joan Albrecht, who was part of the team that worked in the corpus and the reader projects. She is the one who gave me your email address. Do you perhaps know anything about who should I contact about the corpus? Or do you still happen to have access to the raw texts selected for the reader? Thanks in advance Yuji = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
