AMAZING LINGUISTIC FACTS ABOUT AKLANON 1. Aklanon has a relatively rare consonant or semivowel, which is spelled | called a "voiced velar approximant" by linguists. SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Voiced_velar_approximant.ogg NOTE: It is not a voiced velar fricative [gamma] NOR a close-mid back unrounded vowel [baby gamma] NOR a velar "R". 2. Besides this rather unique sound, Aklanon's second claim to fame is words that are pronounced with a final -h. Unfortunately, these are never spelled out by Aklanon writers, but are clearly pronounced by Aklanon speakers. > muhmuh 'crumbs of rice, scattered rice droppings' > kahkah 'scratch at the ground (as fowl do)' > pahpah 'foothold, foot rests in a tree for climbing' > batoh 'stone, throw a stone' | batuhon, but also kababatwan (with h-loss, syllabic economy from *ka-CV-batuh-an) > tuboh 'sugarcane' | katubuhan, but also katubwan (with h-loss) 3. Aklanon may be the only language in the world where the alphabet said in sequence is meaningful. /a ba ka da ea ga ha i la ma na nga o pa ra sa ta u wa ya/ Aba ka, daeaga, ha? Ila' mana nga opa ra sa Ta'uwaya? 'Hop on my back, young lady, eh? Would you like, so to speak, that this rice chaff (go) to Ta'uwaya?' 4.
